Matcha powder
Japanese or Chinese sourced matcha, a finely ground green tea powder that is widely used in the beverage industry
Matcha is produced from the Camellia sinensis plant, the same plant used to make green tea. For high-quality matcha, only the young, tender leaves at the top of the tea shoots are picked (usually by hand) for high-quality matcha.
The freshly picked leaves are steamed to halt oxidation and preserve color and flavor. After steaming, the leaves are cooled and gently dried to reduce moisture. The dried leaves are sorted and milled into a fine and flavorful powder.
Matcha is traditionally consumed as a tea, mixed with hot water as part of the Japanese tea ceremony. These days, it is also widely used in coffee drinks, smoothies, iced drinks and even baked goods, such as cookies, chocolate and breads.
In the health & wellness industry, matcha is added to capsules, included in protein powders and energy bars or even some skincare products.
