Erythritol and the Keto Diet

Erythritol and the Keto Diet

The
keto diet is deficient in its carb content, and that is why regular sugar
intake will kick you out of ketosis, failing your diet plan at its core. But,
this doesn’t mean you don’t get to enjoy desserts at all. Who would want to
have a diet plan which is restricting sweets? Well, they are various low-carb
sugar substitutes that can be used to make keto-friendly desserts. Erythritol
is one of this low-carb alcohol and is approximately two-thirds in sweetness as
compared to regular sugar.

So What Is Erythritol?

It is
not alcohol; instead, it is a food additive known as a sugar alcohol. Unlike
regular sugar, it does not raise your blood sugar levels and certainly doesn’t
carry any ethanol. It is usually obtained industrially by the fermentation of
glucose, which is mostly from corn with yeast. It is around 65 to 70 percent in
sweetness like regular sugar. Still, it certainly doesn’t cause any rise in
blood sugar levels or tooth decay.

The Connection between Erythritol and the Keto
Diet

Well,
Erythritol has very minimal side effects, almost zero net carbs, and even gives
you a few health advantages too. This makes it the perfect choice as a sugar
alternative apart from its low-carb content and sweetness. Moreover, 90 percent
of it is excreted from your body without any changes or metabolism, which is
why it is considered so low in calories. The main reason for Erythritol being
keto-friendly is that it doesn’t raise your insulin or blood sugar levels at
all. In case you want to stick to natural sweeteners instead of artificial
ones, go for stevia or monk fruit. Stevia, when mixed with Erythritol, can
overcome the cooling effect of the latter.

Nutritional Details

As
per the American FDA standards, Erythritol has around 0.2 calories per gram,
which is approximately 20 calories in every 100 grams. On the other hand, it is
considered to have zero calories across different countries. Furthermore, it
has zero GI, which is why it is the best choice for a keto-friendly sweetener.
You should strictly observe the ingredient’s table on Erythritol packaging. It
should be the only ingredient without any further additives like maltodextrin
or dextrose, which might pose a threat to your ketosis.
